    Should do this

I like the idea of the steps still being counted as things, but just being able to arrange them visually into showing they are steps. It’d help me focus my goals further and show how they all really are connected to other goals.

    Should do this 1 cheer

I see this as useful for my abstract goals too. for example, i have a goal of “get my life together”. but i also have goals like, “get out of debt”, “find balance”, “ignore the bad in people”, “work more efficiently”; which all have to do with getting my life together. so this means I end up having 5 separate goals on my list, that really should be organized together.

But I don’t want to just put “get my life together” because that I know that will take years, I would like to be able to cross some of the sub ones off the list. But I don’t want to remove “get my life together” as a goal, because I want to remember exactly why i’m trying to find balance in the first place! (like, specifically what I am trying to get out of it).

Cons: I see the problems with this, out of 43 things, someone could endup with really 1000 because of all the subgoals. SO, I would be fine with the sub-goals still counting as one of my 43 things. I mainly would like to see them organized from a visual standpoint. Like So:
    1. Get My Life Together
    —2. Get Out of Debt
    —3. Work more Efficiently
    —4. Find Balance
    5. Get an Oil Change
    6. Run a 5k
    —7. Run 3 times a week
—8. Buy a new pair of running shoes
    9. Watch less tv
    10. Redesign Website
    —11. Learn Flash

    etc etc.

    Should do this

Is it possible to have two ‘flavors’ of goals – an E-goal where you make daily (or however frequently) entries and an S-goal which you could “expand” to show the sub-steps you needed to complete to achieve it? To take an example from my own goals: Raise my son in a way that honors his uniqueness is not something I have a clear idea how to achieve. This goal unfolds over time and lends itself beautifully to the “entry” format. For goals like “create my own website” if I had the option to add sub-steps I might start with “purchase a domain name”. Then “find a hosting service”. Then “design the site”. Christ, a website sounds like a lot of work! Maybe I just like the sound of this goal? Maybe I wish I was the kind of person who had their own website but in reality I can’t see myself taking any of these steps? So it might be that allowing structure to goals could help users discover if they really, really were interested in a particular goal or not? Perhaps you could add a sub-step goal (or as many as you wanted) each one for a flat-onetime charge or be given a “suggested donation” option so if you couldn’t afford it you could still use the functionality then if you’re able you could contribute more? There is something very energizing about the visual image: seeing your goal and the various milestones in writing. You guys are all programmers. When you’re working on a new piece of functionality do you just make random entries or do you break things into steps, search for hidden dependencies, identify critical milestones etc? I like the idea of having a sub-steps option and would be willing to pay extra for it. BTW - I love 43T and would continue being a loyal user even if all functionality stayed exactly as it is currently. I also feel a little ignorant making a suggestion at all. I have no idea what your site usage metrics look like, what the cost/benefit ratio is for non-trivial changes to functionality etc. One thing I really love about 43T is that all users are equal; we all have the same tools so what we make of 43T is up to us entirely. Although I think contributing to support of the site is reasonable and desireable – I would hate to lose the democratic feeling of 43T.

    Should do this

...or even just a private note page attached to a thing.

    Should do this 1 cheer

    43 things should do

    Should do this 1 cheer

    Should do this

43 Things Operates is contrary to it’s own purpose.

I work on complex projects. As it is, I do not get any credit or cheers for completion of substeps, because they are buried in sub-items.

Since i dont get the cheers people get for high-level tasks, i miss out on the whole point of 43 things.

    Should do this

    For example:

    Become an architect

There are many steps to completing this goal, and it would make someone feel good about themselves if they had completed half the steps toward it, rather than not seeing any progress at all.

    Should do this 2 cheers

For several of my 43 Things, I have many small steps to make. For a simple example, look at the goal “Give 4300 cheers.” First, I have to give 1000, then 2000, etc. For more complex goals, like “Learn Spanish,” sub-things or thing steps might include “get a high school Spanish book on Amazon,” “Use the ATM in Spanish,” and “Read my city’s weekly Spanish newspaper from start to finish this week.”

I would appreciate the functionality to “nest” goals – to make some goals smaller parts of a larger goal. It would be OK to keep the quota at 43 – if I have 5 sub-things under “have a full-length book of poetry published by a reputable publisher of poetry,” you can count the big goal and all the sub-goals as part of my 43 maximum. I just want the ability to do it.
