its 43 because otherwise there are too many and you wouldnt get anything done.
if there are more than that, prioritise and then maybe you could tag the ones that you are not doing yet as “to do in the future”.

I have more than 43 things that I wana do, but I totally understand why the guys at 43things limited the system to a specific number (43 in this case).
I think the system should be slightly adjusted to allow users to add a 44th, 45th, 46th etc. thing, but just not have them show on our main 43things page (i.e. http://www.43things.com/person/USER)
After the 43rd thing, at the bottom of our main list, there could be a “More” or “Future Things” link, that goes to a future things list (but this list should include our main 43 things, at the beginning/top of the page).
This future things list could contain an unlimited number of things. These things only move-to/appear-at the bottom of our main list one-by-one, once a thing has been marked on our main list as done.
